Winter 2018


For many, Winter begins on the Winter Solstice, often referred to as the first day of winter. Those of us following the Celtic Calendar understand that Winter began on November 1st and the Solstice marks the half way point of the season. The Winter Solstice will officially take place on Friday, December 21st at 5:22 pm. We will experience 6 hours and 31 minutes less daylight than we did on the Summer Solstice in June! 

This darkest point of the year is a reminder to pause and recognise the great turning of the wheel of the year and of our own lives. The outer darkness offers an ideal opportunity to nourish our inner lives, through yoga, meditation, contemplation, being in nature or perhaps just sitting and enjoying a candle burning in the darkness. The return of longer days though subtle at first is cause for great celebration, optimism and hope.

We are again this year offering a Winter Solstice Candlelight Meditation as a fundraiser for Wellspring Cancer Support Centre. See below for details. It really is a lovely evening so we hope that you can join us!

 In the midst of holiday festivities, align with the energies of the Earth to welcome the returning light. Join us for a celebration of the Winter Solstice through music, readings, guided meditation and quiet reflection. Chairs are available for this seated practice. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited so please call ahead to register with Wellspring.

Modern life is stressful, and studies show that chronic levels of stress can lead to a host of ailments. The antidote to stress is relaxation.  Restorative Yoga is an active relaxation practice designed to unwind deep layers of stress from your body, mind, and spirit leaving you feeling refreshed and renewed like never before.  This class combines gentle stretches, breathing techniques, guided imagery and restorative yoga poses to activate your body’s innate relaxation response.  It is appropriate for everyone regardless of ability, mobility, or experience with yoga.

February 1st is the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. Traditionally this day was called Imbolc (e-molk) or Ewe’s Milk referring to the lambing season. We start to notice changes in the quality of light, the air feels fresher and we may even start to hear birds singing again. Imbolc is a great time to take a day for yourself to reflect on the winter and look ahead to the spring. Join us for a relaxing and rejuvenating day featuring mindful movement, yoga, meditation, quiet reflection and an indoor labyrinth walk. Suitable for all levels of experience. Lunch is included.

Spanda Yoga Book – Yoga Through the Seasons

We are delighted to announce the release of the initial phase of our upcoming book – Yoga Through The Seasons. We have been working diligently on this project for quite some time. Each section will feature Celtic wisdom, alignment principles and a practice for every month including asana (poses), pranayama (breathing), meditation and contemplation. We also feature suggestions for diet along with seasonal recipes and self care following the traditions of Ayurveda, the sister science to yoga.

Watch for an announcement in the next newsletter. In the fall, we will be adding more information and taking orders for our book, which will be printed to order.
