Summer Practices

In the summer months, we can use our practices to bring balance to this season of pitta or fire. Think calming and cooling practices. Slow down the speed of your physical practice, bring in more of the moon energy with Moon Salutations, forward bends, seated twists and supported backbends as well as restorative practice such as legs up the wall.

If you take your mat outside, find a flat level spot on a smooth surface. Avoid practising in direct sunlight.

Cooling Pranayama includes extending the exhalation, single nostril breathing through the left nostril (Chandra Bedhana) and Shitali which involves breathing in through the mouth with tongue curled and exhaling through the nostrils.

In terms of diet, also keep things cool and light. Enjoy vegetables and fruits that have a high water content such as melons, cucumbers and leafy greens. Avoid foods that are dense and heavy. Stay well hydrated. Try infusing water with fresh fruit like berries and citrus or vegetables like cucumber for variety.

Herbs and spices that reduce the pitta dosha include mint, fennel, cilantro, cumin and coriander.

Why – We have found lovely space to rent in a studio that is dedicated to yoga.

In a unique heritage house on the corner of Ontario and Princess Streets. Owned and managed by yoga teacher Mary McCullough who lives onsite.

What about my 10 class pass?
As of May 30th, we will no longer be selling 10 class passes. Those who have a current 10 class pass may still use them at Yoga East. However we are asking everyone, if possible, to please use up their passes before June 24th.

Since we are not teaching in August, those holding passes that expire after July 28th will be given an extension.

Those who have purchased a pass that expires after June 24th and for whatever reason do not wish to attend classes at Yoga East will be given a refund of the balance of their 10 class pass. We will be contacting everyone holding outstanding passes by mid-June to determine which option they prefer.

Since the floor space is smaller, we can only guarantee a spot in the class to those who have registered for a session. Drop-ins and those on a pass cannot be guaranteed a spot. However, given our small class sizes, it is very unlikely that we would ever have to turn anyone away.

Please come and give it a try in July! You won’t be disappointed!

Think Green!

As the weather warms up in late spring and the Earth becomes green again, it is a great time to shift the diet to lighter, cooling foods by eating more green vegetables. It is a good idea to start eating all varieties of salads, adding pumpkin or sunflower seeds.  Also, incorporate more “greens” like spinach, kale, collard greens, cucumber, zucchini, and broccoli, to name a few, into the daily diet.

And when the days start to grow very warm, a glass of refreshing “Iced Mint Tea” can cool you off.

Iced Mint Tea

1 Pot of Mint Tea made extra strong –  add honey for desired sweetness and let cool
Pour into a pitcher and add lots of ice to chill.
Pour into glass with ice and a fresh mint leaf on top for garnish. Enjoy!

Beltane

The first of May is the half way point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice. Traditionally it is the start of the summer season, a time to celebrate the greening of the earth. Ancient Celtic traditions call this day Beltane, roughly translated as “bright fire,” when farmers would bring their livestock out of the winter barns and into the spring fields, often taking them between two huge bonfires as a way to ward off any evil spirits.

Beltane Meditation
by Phaedra Bonewits

May it be a full and rich summer. May babies be strong and crops be abundant. May Maypoles be wrapped with joyous wishes and may the dancers find what they desire. May what needs to begin, begin and grow stronger. May what needs to end, slip away with dignity. May the bonfires be bright and life go on with all its vigour.
