 Autumn Equinox and the Vata Season

 
September brings with it the second of the fall harvests, primarily that of fruits and vegetables, celebrated at the Autumn Equinox. In Ontario, the Autumn Equinox will arrive at 10:21 a.m. EDT on Thursday September 22nd. 

The Equinox is a time to contemplate balance on all levels. Fall is a time when vata or the air element begins to increase as we move from the intense heat of summer to crisper temperatures and stronger winds. Some signs of a vata imbalance include nervousness, a feeling of being ungrounded, insomnia, dry skin and hair, muscle stiffness and muscle aches.

Establishing a simple daily routine is one of the best ways to calm vata. Get up early to benefit from the stillness of the early morning. Before you shower or bathe, massage your skin with warm sesame oil to counteract the dryness affecting the skin and joints at this time of year. It is a good time of year to use a neti pot for nasal washing. Put a few drops of oil in the nasal passages to lubricate the sinuses and calm the mind.

In your yoga practice, use standing poses, especially standing balance poses to help align hips and shoulders while encouraging grounding. The cooler weather invites a more vigorous practice using back bends and arm balances. Alternate nostril breathing is recommended as is a long Shavasana to help ease the mind as the winds of seasonal change increase in their intensity.

Restorative Yoga

Valerie will again be offering Restorative Yoga Classes on Sunday afternoons. A restorative practice is a great compliment to a regular yoga practice and other physical activities or can be used on its own for deep relaxation, healing and rejuvenation.

Dates: September 18th, October 16th, November 20th and December 18th

Time: 1:15 – 2:30 p.m.

Fee: $15.00 per class or $60.00 for all four classes

We love teaching at Yoga East! It’s very quiet,clean and beautiful space wonderfully conducive to our yoga teaching. Located at 537 Ontario Street, at the corner of Ontario and Princess St. There is lots of free all day parking on both Ontario and Princess Streets within a few steps of the studio. Please come and join us!

Mataji’s Soothing Chai – a calming drink to reduce Vata and neutralize Pitta and Kapha

2 cups water
1 tbsp fresh peppermint or 3 bags peppermint tea
1 quart milk (any kind will do)
1 cinnamon stick
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp dry ginger
3/4 tsp ground cardamom
1 tsp whole black peppercorns
2 tbsp sweetener – honey, brown rice syrup

Bring water to a boil. Remove from heat. Add peppermint or tea bags and steep for 20 minutes. Strain or remove tea bags. Add milk and spices. Heat gradually to desired temperature. Add sweetener and serve.
